  • Issues Pile Up as Netflix Prepares for Major Sports and Wrestling Broadcasts

The highly anticipated Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match at AT&T Stadium was supposed to be one of Netflix’s standout streaming events of the year. However, technical difficulties marred the experience for viewers long before either fighter entered the ring.

From the start, fans were plagued with constant buffering and blurry images during the Friday undercard, leading many to question Netflix’s preparedness for a high-profile live event. By the time the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano lightweight title bout was underway, social media was flooded with complaints about the frustrating viewing experience, with nearly every trending topic on X focused on the streaming problems.

The glitches proved particularly concerning for Netflix, as Tyson vs. Paul was considered a crucial test ahead of more significant events scheduled for the holiday season, including NFL games on Christmas Day and the move of WWE Raw to Netflix in January. These high-stakes broadcasts will attract millions of viewers, and the stream’s failure to meet expectations raised alarm bells across the fanbase.

Criticism of Netflix’s live production capabilities spread quickly on social media. Fans and commentators alike expressed concerns about the platform’s readiness for major sports broadcasts, especially with NFL games set to stream exclusively on Netflix starting December 25.

“Netflix is finding out in real time how hard it is to produce live TV,” said sports analyst Emmanuel Acho. Many others echoed similar sentiments, questioning how Netflix would handle the demands of NFL broadcasts and the weekly WWE Raw shows if they struggled with a relatively straightforward boxing event.

“How are they supposed to handle primetime NFL games that could impact AFC seeding in six weeks?” asked Brett Kollmann, highlighting the significance of Netflix’s upcoming sports programming.

Despite the technical issues, Netflix has not yet provided an official statement. Fans are anxiously awaiting updates, especially as major sports events loom on the horizon. With the bar set high for Netflix’s streaming capabilities, the platform will need to address these technical difficulties swiftly to avoid further damage to its reputation in live sports broadcasting.
