- Young Quarterback Embraces Increased Commitment After Benching
- Colts’ Richardson Focuses on Attention to Detail to Maintain Starting Role
After turning heads at the 2023 NFL combine with record-breaking performances and a memorable backflip celebration, Anthony Richardson displayed his passion for the game. The 6-4, 244-pound rookie quarterback’s enthusiasm was evident both on and off the field, from his dramatic touchdown celebrations to his impressive combine workout.
However, the transition to the role of franchise quarterback has proven more complex. Despite his raw talent and potential, Richardson’s growth as a leader took a hit two weeks ago when he was benched, only to be reinstated as the starting QB this week.
The benching came as a result of Richardson’s need for further development in some key areas, with teammates and sources shedding light on the situation. Described as “naïve” rather than defiant, Richardson’s struggles were not a matter of attitude but rather a young player still learning the ropes.
Despite online rumors questioning his character, Colts coach Shane Steichen and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner defended Richardson’s integrity, emphasizing his desire to improve.
“He’s a great kid, and I look at character as No. 1,” Steichen said. “You can work with that.” Buckner, a team captain, also praised Richardson’s willingness to learn. “He wants to be great, and he’s willing to listen,” he said.
As the youngest starting quarterback in the NFL at 22, Richardson’s position comes with immense pressure. His actions and decisions are under constant scrutiny, which is why Steichen felt the need to bench him in order to reset his focus.
Richardson has since committed to sharpening his approach, starting his workdays earlier to dive deeper into film study and team strategy. He’s also been working closely with offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. to refine his understanding of pass protection.
Steichen believes this increased attention to detail is paying off. “It’s about the little things—from the classroom to the practice field to the weight room,” Steichen said. “We’ve seen big strides in Richardson’s development over the past two weeks.”
Richardson has echoed these sentiments, stating he’s ready to make whatever sacrifices necessary to improve. “I’m willing to sacrifice anything for the team,” he said. “These past two weeks have really opened my eyes.”
The Colts’ coaching staff is clear: Richardson’s future as the team’s starting quarterback is in his hands. The focus now shifts to continued improvement and proving he’s ready to lead Indianapolis for the long term.
“[Steichen] told me I was going to be the starter from here on out, but it’s up to me to keep my job,” Richardson said. “I have to keep showing that I can be the guy for this team.”
