Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich didn’t hold back his frustration after rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley fumbled the football just inches from the goal line, turning a would-be touchdown into a costly mistake. The play unfolded when Corley, with a clear path to the end zone, let go of the ball too soon, leading to a touchback instead of a score.
“Honestly, I was definitely frustrated and angry,” Ulbrich said. “But this is an incredible learning opportunity for him. I promise you, ten years from now when he’s still playing in this league, that will never happen again.”
Asked what he told Corley after the play, Ulbrich said, “First of all, you can’t do that. And second, you owe us one.”
The incident highlights a recurring issue in the NFL, where players occasionally celebrate prematurely and drop the ball before crossing the goal line. While mistakes like this are rare, Ulbrich believes this experience will serve as a crucial lesson for Corley’s growth as a player.
