The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines on Wednesday when head coach Mike Tomlin announced that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson had won the starting job over Justin Fields. However, Fields won’t be relegated to the sidelines during the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8.
Speaking on *The Rich Eisen Show*, Tomlin teased a special role for Fields, saying, “My friend Raheem Morris better be ready for a Justin Fields package. There’s too much talent to be sitting around watching.”
Fields, entering his fourth NFL season, showed flashes of brilliance during his time with the Chicago Bears. In 40 games, he threw for 6,674 yards with 40 touchdowns and rushed for 2,220 yards and 14 scores. While he didn’t do enough in the preseason to secure the starting position—throwing for 199 yards and rushing for 48—Tomlin is not planning to let his talents go unused.
Although Wilson will start against the Falcons, it seems Fields will still get opportunities to make an impact and provide a spark for the Steelers’ offense when needed.
