Caitlin Clark Breaks WNBA Rookie Record in Indiana Fever’s Win Over Connecticut Sun

Date:

Caitlin Clark continues to make WNBA history, setting a new record for the most three-pointers by a rookie during the Indiana Fever’s 84-80 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Clark hit her 86th triple of the season in the first quarter, surpassing the previous record of 85 set by Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream in 2022. She added two more three-pointers, bringing her season total to 88.

Clark contributed 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists as the Fever ended their 11-game losing streak against the Sun. Indiana had lost all three previous matchups against Connecticut this season and hadn’t defeated them since July 2021.

Reflecting on the team’s growth, Clark said, “We’re night and day different. With a young group, it’s all about figuring each other out and learning, and that’s really paid off for us.”

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 23 points, continuing her hot streak with an average of 25.6 points per game since the league resumed after the Paris Olympic break. In her postgame interview, Mitchell praised her chemistry with Clark, saying, “Caitlin brings pace, space, and an incredible shooting ability. You just have to be ready when your number’s called.”

The game remained close throughout, with the Sun nearly staging a comeback. However, Lexie Hull’s two clutch free throws secured the win for the Fever. Hull scored 17 points in her second start of the season.

With the victory, Indiana improves to 15-16 as they push for a postseason spot, while Connecticut falls to 22-8. DiJonai Carrington led the Sun with 19 points and six steals, while Alyssa Thomas added 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

The Fever also set a WNBA attendance record, with 17,274 fans filling Indiana’s Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The team surpassed 500,000 total fans across home and road games this season. Among the attendees were Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles and Gabby Thomas, who met with the players after the game.

Biles shared her excitement on social media, posting, “EVERYONE WATCHES WOMEN’S SPORTS. So happy to go support! My first of many WNBA games.” Thomas echoed her sentiment, saying, “Had so much fun supporting these stars.”

In other WNBA news, Angel Reese’s streak of 20+ rebounds in three consecutive games came to an end as the Chicago Sky fell to the Washington Mystics 74-70. Reese still managed 14 rebounds, marking her 24th straight game with double-digit boards. Despite the loss, Reese continues to impress in her rookie season, setting multiple rebounding and double-double records. Stefanie Dolson led the Mystics with 17 points, while Michaela Onyenwere led the Sky with 15 points.
